Sketch #16

Sketch #15

I’m late with this post, but I did actually draw this sketch yesterday. My camera’s batteries were dead so I had to charge them overnight. Anyways, this sketch is a bit of an exercise in three-dimensional objects and basically just getting a feel for the actual shape. It might not look like much, but I think it was useful to do this. Having a three-dimensional feel for the actual object instead of just drawing lines on a flat surface seems to be a pretty useful skill.

Headphones

Sketch #15

Sketch #14

After a bit of hiatus, I’m back. I’m having a lot of trouble picking subjects though. This time, I drew whatever I had lying on my table, which happens to be these Philips headphones. I also took a photo of them from the position I was looking at them from. I think the major problems with this sketch are that I wasn’t really able to capture the shape of the earpieces, and the headband looks kinda twisted. I think the latter is because the arc I drew isn’t completely smooth. It should probably closely resemble an ellipse.

I hope I can manage to keep a steady schedule from now on. I think I need to invent some sort of system so that I don’t end up trying to come up with a subject for half an hour every day.

A boat

Sketch #13

Here’s a tall ship. The sketch is not very good. I don’t much to say about it. Photo reference.

A gamepad

Sketch #12

Sketch #12

So, more negative space. Didn’t fill out the whole area around it this time. I’m not really sure here if I messed the picture up or if it just looks weird because there are no details. I drew this from lifewith an Xbox 360 gamepad as my model. I’m looking at it from the left a bit. It was on the table in front of me. The battery bulge in particular looks kinda strange. I should had probably taken a picture so I could compare these digitally later, or maybe I could fill in some of the details to see if it looks weird.

A guitar

Sketch #11

Sketch #11

Today I’m employing a technique known as “negative space” to draw a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar. To be honest I think I ended up flattening the perspective on this one. Probably should had picked something with more depth. Not that it’s perfect otherwise.

Gradius

Sketch #10

Sketch #10

Today, two sketches. They’re related though. The first one, on the left, is a moai head. I decided that alone would be too simple, so as a bonus, on the right, Vic Viper 2, the ship from Gradius 2. Picking them was inspired by watching Andrés Delikat’s tool-assisted speedrun of Gradius.

I’m pretty happy with both of these. The ship lacks a bunch of little details, but it looks pretty decent anyways.

An eagle

Sketch #9

Sketch #9

So, I missed a couple of days of sketching. I gotta make that up somehow, but here’s Monday’s sketch (late, I know). It’s a bald eagle from photo reference. I should probably start drawing from life too, although photos are good practice.

I think the main problem with this eagle is that it should be wider. Also perhaps the top of the head should be flatter. Also it’s hard to make it look feathery, so I didn’t really try that hard. I feel like that’s the sort of detail I’m just not very interested in attempting to produce at this point.

A robot

Sketch #7

Sketch #8

A proper sketch this time. I messed a bunch of things up, but I do like parts of it. The eyes seem to look like they’re looking off to the side, but I think that’s a lighting issue. What I liked about drawing this one was that I was able to feel the 3D pretty well at parts, like I wasn’t just drawing on flat paper, but shaping this three-dimensional object. Reference picture.

Cats

Sketch #6

Sketch #7

So I’m behind my schedule as it’s way past midnight already. I was kinda busy today and forgot to do the sketch in time. So now I’m kinda tired and I can’t really seem to produce a proper sketch. So I was going to draw a kitten from photo reference as usual, and I started drawing its face in the middle of the page there. It just wasn’t looking right though. Then I figured maybe it would help if I drew some of the patterns in the fur, but it ended up just looking weird. So then I started another sketch, but that didn’t go so well either, so in lieu of a proper sketch, I drew some even sloppier cats around the original unfinished sketch.

I need to go get some sleep now.

A treasure hunter

Sketch #6

Sketch #6

So, I got a new game in the mail today, and I figured it’d be a nice idea to sketch from a drawn reference for a change, so I drew a picture of the main character, Henry Hatsworth, as seen in the cover art. I think it turned out pretty nicely. There are some minor mistakes, like that the monocle and the teacup are too small, but I think it’s still a very recognizable rendition of Henry. The game’s lots of fun, by the way. Played through the first world so far.
