Here’s Kirby, known for his work in such games as Kirby’s Dreamland and Kirby: Power Paintbrush. Happens to be one of my favorite video game series. LunarCrisis has been doing a bunch of Kirby sketches on his blog, so I figured I have to do one too. Here’s my reference. Today’s sketch is brought to you in full color. ^__^

So, I haven’t been sketching for over three weeks now. Sorry about that. I’ve been kinda busy for parts of that time, and for other parts I just forgot.

Today’s sketch drawn without a reference (can you believe that) and with the topic given by matrin on #ludumdare. I guess basically I just tried to draw a brown soap bubble. It doesn’t really look very soapy or bubbly. Or dirty for that matter. It’s round and brown though.

Today’s sketch is a pig from photo reference. I think it turned out pretty good. Obviously it could be a lot more detailed, but I think I nailed the proportions pretty well.

This was also a digital sketch, this time using my wacom tablet and the GIMP.

Today’s theme is symmetry. I drew some chess pieces and tried to make them symmetrical. There’s also a random scribble on the right there. Also symmetrical. What you may notice is that the chess pieces are pretty butt ugly. That’s because I couldn’t find any chess pieces in my apartment and I didn’t want to use a photo. So I made some up, and the abstract models of chess pieces that I had in my head don’t quite stack up with the real thing. The castle and the rook aren’t that bad, but the bishop and the king just look weird.

Another thing you might notice in this sketch is the complete lack of paper grain. That’s because I decided to switch to digital tools for a change. This sketch was made using a Wacom Bamboo Fun tablet and DrPetter’s CherryBrush paint application, which seems pretty nice (using it for the first time now).

Sketch #15

I’m late with this post, but I did actually draw this sketch yesterday. My camera’s batteries were dead so I had to charge them overnight. Anyways, this sketch is a bit of an exercise in three-dimensional objects and basically just getting a feel for the actual shape. It might not look like much, but I think it was useful to do this. Having a three-dimensional feel for the actual object instead of just drawing lines on a flat surface seems to be a pretty useful skill.

After a bit of hiatus, I’m back. I’m having a lot of trouble picking subjects though. This time, I drew whatever I had lying on my table, which happens to be these Philips headphones. I also took a photo of them from the position I was looking at them from. I think the major problems with this sketch are that I wasn’t really able to capture the shape of the earpieces, and the headband looks kinda twisted. I think the latter is because the arc I drew isn’t completely smooth. It should probably closely resemble an ellipse.

I hope I can manage to keep a steady schedule from now on. I think I need to invent some sort of system so that I don’t end up trying to come up with a subject for half an hour every day.

So, more negative space. Didn’t fill out the whole area around it this time. I’m not really sure here if I messed the picture up or if it just looks weird because there are no details. I drew this from lifewith an Xbox 360 gamepad as my model. I’m looking at it from the left a bit. It was on the table in front of me. The battery bulge in particular looks kinda strange. I should had probably taken a picture so I could compare these digitally later, or maybe I could fill in some of the details to see if it looks weird.

Today I’m employing a technique known as “negative space” to draw a Gibson Les Paul electric guitar. To be honest I think I ended up flattening the perspective on this one. Probably should had picked something with more depth. Not that it’s perfect otherwise.
